SUMMARY:Online Screening and Panel Discussion "Picture a scientist"
DESCRIPTION:Dies ist eine Veranstaltung organisiert vom FEM POWER Projekt des Leibniz-Institut für Neurobiologie in Magdeburg: When you picture a scientist – what do you see?
A man in a white coat, wearing large protective goggles, looking through a microscope or swirling a test tube - for many, this is probably still one of the first images that comes to mind when they hear the word ”scientist”.
The documentary PICTURE A SCIENTIST gets to the bottom of the question as to why science in our minds is still a field dominated by men. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring take viewers on a journey through their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights.
Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
Followed by the panel discussion “How male is science?”
After the screening, we invited 5 scientists from Magdeburg to discuss how male science really (still) is. What experience with (in)equalities do they have? What challenges do they face? What improvements have already been achieved? Is science really still that male? What about motherhood (or parenthood) and science? And what can we do in order to create equal opportunities for everyone in science?

Coming from different career stages and scientific disciplines, panellists will be:

Prof. Dr. Anne Lequy, Rector of University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal

Prof. Dr. Gerald Warnecke, faculty for mathematics, OvGU Magdeburg

Dr. Sanja Bauer Mikulovic, Group Leader at LIN Magdeburg

Dr. Franziska Appel, Equal Opportunities Officer at IAMO Halle

Katrina Deane, PhD Student at LIN Magdeburg

The panel will be moderated by Anna Gebhard, PhD Student at the Faculty of Mathematics at OvGU Magdeburg, and Dr. Sarah Czerney, Consultant for Equal Opportunities at LIN Magdeburg and co-editor of the book „Mutterschaft und Wissenschaft. Die (Un)Vereinbarkeit von Mutterbild und wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeit“ on motherhood in science. Registration: Write an email to sarah.czerney@lin-magdeburg.de!
