SUMMARY:DIP Lecture Series: Multilingualism in Health Care in Germany – Chances and Limitations
DESCRIPTION:The lecture addresses language barriers in mental health services, where providers in Germany cannot communicate with 12% of their patients. It examines global strategies to overcome these barriers, including ad-hoc interpreters, receptive multilingualism, machine translation, and the rare use of professional interpreters, highlighting the advantages, challenges, and cultural factors involved. The Hamburg Interpreting Pool, a pioneering project integrating professional interpreters into outpatient mental health care, concludes the lecture and prompts discussion.
The lecture is part of the DIP Lecture Series and is open to students, lecturers, guests, and anyone interested. It will be held in person at both the Magdeburg and Stendal campuses, with live-streaming available.
