The international Master's programme in Water Engineering is offered in cooperation with the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Universidad de La Coruña (Spain). If you enroll for the winter semester, the first semester takes place at the University of A Coruña and the second semester at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. If you start your studies in the summer semester, however, the first semester will be at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and the second semester at the University of A Coruña. The summer semester starts in Magdeburg in April and the winter semester starts in A Coruña in October. The third semester is a practical semester at one of the two universities mentioned or at other participating universities or in companies or institutions.

Programme objectives

The objective of the programme is to acquire fundamental professional knowledge and the ability to work independently in accordance with scientific methods, to master the varied demands of working life in applied practice, research or teaching, and to deal effectively with the frequently changing tasks that arise in the professional life of an engineer working in water management.

On the Master’s programme in Water Engineering,graduates acquire expertise in the fields of national and international water management planning processes, in drinking water supply and waste water disposal, hydrology, hydraulic engineering and experimental hydraulics, in restoration ecology and in biotechnology and river morphology, as well as flow and process modelling.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master‘s programme in Water Engineering requires a good or excellent university degree (minimum 2.5 in German grading system) completed over a standard course duration of at least 7 semesters or at least 210 credits in the subjects of Water Management, Civil Engineering or a strongly related field.
Applicants who cannot meet the requirement for 210 credits but can provide evidence of at least 180 credits will be given the opportunity to obtain the missing 30 credits over one semester of a Bachelor‘s programme before the start of the Master‘s course.

Evidence must be provided of knowledge of the English language to level B2 of the Common European Framework. Evidence of the necessary English language skills can be provided in the form of:

  • IELTS exam - 5 points or
  • Cambridge exam - First Certificate in English FCE (A-C) or
  • TOEIC - 541 points or
  • TOEFL iBT - 87 points (computer based) or
  • UNIcert II or
  • ALTE level - Level 3 or
  • equivalent tests

In cases of doubt, the Board of Examiners will decide whether sufficient evidence of English language skills has been demonstrated.

Applicants may be exempt from providing evidence of their English language skills if they were taught in a bilingual school (to at least the end of year 10), they are native speakers, or can show evidence of a period of at least half a year spent at an English-speaking school, university or other institution.


Date of admission

Admission to this programme is granted at the end of January for the summer semester and at the end of June for the winter semester. Please pay attention to these admission dates when applying for your visa.

Erasmus scholarship for the semester abroad in Spain

Students can apply for an Erasmus scholarship for the semester abroad in Spain. The Bachelor grade is decisive for the awarding of scholarships. Experience shows that all applicants can receive a scholarship. However, there is no guarantee that a scholarship will be awarded. Students who do not receive a scholarship have to pay the tuition fees at the Universidad de La Coruña themselves.

Prospects

The international Master‘s programme in Water Engineering prepares students for professional activity in higher positions in various areas of the water industry on an international level. The content of the programme is suitable for roles in supply and disposal companies, the consulting field, in environment agencies and ministries, in private water industry or environmental protection companies, in engineering firms offering consulting and planning, and institutions, as well as in teaching and research.
