The Late Summer School is designed to give you the best possible start to your studies. It combines subject-related preparation courses from the participating degree programmes and departments with a supporting programme of leisure activities and information events.
For international students (“incomings”), the focus is on intensive German language courses.
Courses
Preparation Course: Mathematics
For first-year students in the degree programmes Water, Environment, Construction and Safety (WUBS) and Engineering and Industrial Design (IWID)
Over two weeks, student tutors from higher semesters will guide you through the key mathematical topics:
- Linear equations
- Exponents and powers
- Root and exponential equations
- Trigonometry
The advantage: your tutors are students themselves, familiar with the material and with the challenges you may face, and can prepare you effectively for your studies.
Preparation Course Media Technology
For first-year students in the Journalism programme, Department of Social Work, Health and Media (SGM)
If Journalism is your chosen degree programme, this course provides the perfect introduction. Over two weeks, you will gain practical insights into:
- Audio and video technology
- Digital recording and editing techniques
- Broadcasting technology
- h2 radio
- Image composition
- Camera operation and video editing
General Preparation Course: Project Management and MS Word/Excel or Academic Writing (“Studying Successfully”)
For first-year students of all other degree programmes without a subject-specific preparation course
This two-week course covers topics useful for any programme of study:
- Week 1: Introduction to project management
- Week 2: Either refresh your knowledge of MS Word/Excel or gain your first insights into academic writing and study techniques (including the notepad principle).
Preparation Course: German as a Foreign Language
For international first-year students and exchange students
This course allows international students to build or refresh their German language skills.
- Includes a placement test at the beginning and a final exam
- Recognized with 3 ECTS credits (with at least 75% attendance and successful completion of the exam)

- Details: Meet fellow students in a relaxed setting. Participate in bowling challenges in different teams. Includes a soft drink. Great chance to make friends for studies or life.
City Rallye
- Date & Time: Friday, 19.09.2025, from 4 p.m.
- Meeting point: Park in front of Festung Mark
- Details: Explore Magdeburg in small groups. Discover hidden gems, beautiful spots, and trendy student locations. Complete tasks along the way. Ideal for newcomers or those who want to see the city in a fun way.
Cycle Tour
- Date & Time: Saturday, 20.09.2025, 1 p.m.
- Meeting Point: FEZ, Breitscheidtstraße 51, 39114 Magdeburg
- Details: Explore Magdeburg and surroundings by bike. Bring your own bike or hire one. Route includes the waterway junction in Hohenwarthe, with optional stops.
Yoga (Viniyoga)
- Date & Time: Monday, 22.09.2025, from 3:30 p.m.
- Location: House 1, Room 1.36
- Details: Focus on gentle movement and breath-based exercises suitable for any physical condition. No special sportswear required, but comfortable clothing is recommended. Helps relax and balance for everyday life and studies.

Final BBQ Event

- Meeting Point: Lawn in the park behind building 1, near KuKo Frösi
- Details: Barbecue buffet, drinks, music, and sports activities. Wrap up the week, meet participants from different fields and international students, and celebrate the start of university life.
