Since 2008, the family room in Stendal has been offering support to parents, making it an important part of our university's family-friendly approach.

The family room is aimed at students and employees with children at the Stendal university location. To make it easier to balance studies and family or work and family, students at the university offer supplementary, needs-based, and free childcare at FaZi. FaZi's specialty is versatile, individualized, and situation-specific services that provide children with optimal support and guidance.

Concept

As part of the student project ‘Family-Friendly University’, a survey on balancing studies and family life was carried out at the Stendal campus during the 2007/08 winter semester in collaboration with Prof. Dr Beatrice Hungerland. Based on this needs analysis, a concept was developed for university-affiliated childcare facilities. The concept was implemented in the summer term of 2008: the FaZi was designed by participating students from the Applied Childhood Studies programme and was officially opened in June 2008.

Since then, the FaZi was organised by Professor Dr Beatrice Hungerland until the summer term of 2024. Ms Carolin Lucke-Schurk is currently taking over as head. The students are very committed and strive to provide the best possible care for the children.

All students at the Stendal campus have the opportunity to become carers in the family room. A diverse team is always welcome.

Information for parents

Childcare can be arranged for all children of the university’s students and staff, subject to agreement. Childcare hours are determined not only by the parents’ needs but also by the carers’ availability.

For this reason, advance booking is essential – the earlier, the better. Requests for childcare can be made at any time by emailing fazi@ahw.h2.de.

Self-organised care

At times when childcare is not provided by the FaZi team, or when it is not required, parents may organise childcare themselves. Parents may look after their children themselves in the family room, or arrange for their partners, relatives or friends to look after them. To ensure the best possible childcare arrangements in such cases, parents must register or notify the FaZi team.

Registration and documents

Before visiting FaZi, you’ll need to complete a form to help the FaZi team get to know your child and their routines. The form will be sent by email on request.

To complete the registration process – and, not least, to get to know the FaZi team and, if applicable, the relevant carer – it is a good idea to meet in the family room before the first session. This gives everyone involved the chance to ‘get to know each other a little’ and allows all the formalities to be sorted out on the spot.

Establishing contact

The FaZi team is always delighted to welcome new and enthusiastic students who would like to get involved in the family room! Anyone interested can contact the team via the FaZi email address fazi@ahw.h2.de or speak to a supervisor in person.

As well as gaining many wonderful experiences whilst volunteering with and for FaZi, you can also have this work recognised as a work placement to complement your studies.

Documents required

To become a supervisor, there are a few formalities to complete beforehand: Firstly, you must provide both an extended criminal record check and proof of measles vaccination. Secondly, you will receive a briefing on your duty of supervision.

Mentors are given a work placement contract – even if they do not wish to have their mentoring hours at FaZi recognised as part of a work placement – so that they are insured through the university for their work at FaZi. This is arranged no later than the first mentoring session on site.
