Project Group: “Solidarity Citizenship – Solidarity Region Altmark”

The project group was established in November 2021 as part of the Altmark Network Conference.

Its goal is to develop and implement innovative models of local and regional citizenship (solidarity citizenship) based on human rights and social justice for everyone, regardless of nationality or residence status. These models are made possible through alliances between people with migration or refugee backgrounds, civil society, and municipal authorities.

With this objective, the project group aligns itself with the concept of "Solidarity Cities" and places a particular focus on the rural areas of the Altmark region in Saxony-Anhalt. arity Cities" an und legt ihren spezifischen Fokus auf die ländlichen Gebiete der Altmark, Sachsen-Anhalt.

Investigation of Reasons for (Non-)Participation in School Meals in the Stendal District

Background

In recent years, the Stendal district has seen a steady decline in participation in school meals at secondary schools. Participation in school meals is well below the state average. With a focus on promoting healthy and balanced nutrition for young people in the district, the district council was interested in working with Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences to investigate the reasons behind this trend and develop measures to address it.

Goal

The aim of the project was to work with students to identify factors influencing (non-)participation in school meals in the Stendal district. The project sought to uncover potential barriers and underlying reasons in order to implement effective measures that promote healthy and balanced nutrition for students in the district.

Project Duration

April 2020 - April 2023

Further Information

Children’s Uni (Kinderuni)

Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences is the first German university to offer the degree program "Applied Childhood Studies." This interdisciplinary program provides a novel perspective on children, adolescents, and their life environments. To put this into practice, a Children's University is held 1-2 times per month, allowing students to directly apply and test childhood research insights. The focus is on reaching children facing social challenges and disadvantages.

In a childhood studies handbook, research staff, lecturers, and students of Applied Childhood Studies have documented how various methods are used to explore the achievement of goals, impact on children, and improvements to the Children's University in Stendal.

Support for the Development of the “Local Child Protection Network” in Stendal District

Project Description

The "Local Child Protection Network" was established through a participatory founding process, with strong involvement of stakeholders in defining structures and priorities. This approach placed high demands during the initial phase, as participants were accustomed to pre-established structures.

Seeing and taking ownership of their own agency was an important learning process for all involved. Over time, it became clear that the effort invested in the founding phase paid off due to the high level of initiative taken by stakeholders. Workshops offered during this phase made a significant contribution to achieving this goal.

June 18-26, 2022, Stendal

The Stendal ArtWeek "Suddenly Everything Changes?" is aimed primarily at children and adolescents, but also at their families and those who work with young people. Through workshops, readings, and theatrical performances, it explores the question of what can suddenly change one's own world or the wider world.

Such events can make us stumble and reflect: How was it before, and how is it now? The ArtWeek provides opportunities to listen, talk, write, imagine, draw, paint, watch theater, and create it yourself.

Admission to all events is free.

Psychology with Focus on Rehabilitation

Your Master Plan – Graduation Instead of Dropout

Project Description

Increasingly, students at German universities face rising performance pressure. Overwhelmed students often turn to substances as a coping mechanism for academic stress. In response, Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, the University of Hildesheim, Minax Intermedia, and the DELPHI Society launched the web portal for students, "Dein Masterplan - Abschluss statt Abschuss", in January 2014. This joint project, www.dein-masterplan.de, is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).

The web portal provides students with psychological support for everyday university life as well as prevention resources for substance abuse. At Magdeburg-Stendal University, qualified psychology students under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mark Helle provide online counseling to students nationwide. The online platform complements in-person counseling services and is entirely free of charge.

"Dein Masterplan" offers practical solutions for academic challenges and helps students gain clarity and perspective. The website supports students in managing stressful periods, maintaining mental health and quality of life, and successfully completing their studies.

Alongside the launch, surveys and studies on academic pressure and substance use were conducted at Magdeburg-Stendal University and the University of Hildesheim. Marketing initiatives at Magdeburg-Stendal in early 2014 served as a model for nationwide promotion at other universities. Experiences and results are later made available through the portal's evaluation section.

Dementia Network (“Flechtwerk Demenz”)

Project Description

The project is committed to improving the psychosocial care structure for people with dementia and their relatives. Its main focus areas include raising public awareness about dementia, providing training programs for different target groups involved in formal and informal care, offering targeted psychosocial counseling for people with dementia and their families, identifying gaps in care, and developing forward-looking concepts, as well as conducting accompanying scientific research.

In cooperation with regional partners, established approaches such as empowerment and individual psychological counseling are combined with new concepts-such as integrated diagnostic and counseling services, cooperation models with physicians, and internet-based training programs-to enhance coordination and networking within the care system.

Since 2007, project members and graduates of the Rehabilitation Psychology program have implemented a needs-oriented care service that has become an integral part of the care structure in Stendal and the surrounding region.

Specifically, the activities of the Flechtwerk Demenz project include:

  • Events for the general public (e.g., lectures, film evenings)
  • Organization of conferences (2008, 2011)
  • Professional lectures and training programs for practitioners
  • Diagnostic services and counseling
  • Training programs for family caregivers commissioned by AOK Saxony-Anhalt
  • Professional consultation and concept development for institutions
  • Evaluation activities
  • Regional networking (including the development of a network map)

Partnership and Chronic Illness

Project Description

International studies have shown that the quality of the partner relationship and the illness perceptions of both the affected individuals and their partners have a significant influence on how a chronic illness is managed and coped with. The aim of this project is to investigate whether these findings also apply to people with chronic illnesses and their partners in German-speaking countries.

The first objective of the study is to develop and evaluate a German-language version of the IPQ-R (Illness Perception Questionnaire - Revised; original English version by Moss-Morris et al., 2002) for patients and their partners. In its original form, this questionnaire assesses the individual illness perceptions of people with chronic illnesses; however, a German-language partner version does not yet exist.

In addition, the study examines relationship satisfaction as well as the perceived and provided social support of both partners and analyzes their reciprocal effects. Data collection is conducted through written questionnaires and, in exceptional cases, supplemented by interviews. Participation is anonymous and voluntary. The research project has been reviewed and approved by the Ethics Committee of Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences (Ref. No. 4973-19).

Duration / Project Period

Pathological PC/Internet Use: Rehabilitation Psychology Approaches

Project Description

PPG - pathological PC use can be described as a disorder of relationship and self-esteem regulation, reflected in uncontrolled, excessive computer use. Individuals affected often experience a range of secondary consequences, including social isolation, financial difficulties, and physical health problems. In the scientific community, there is still no consensus on the exact definition, diagnostic criteria, etiology, or standardized intervention approaches. Therefore, this project aims to discuss and analyze various psychodiagnostic approaches.

The medium-term goal is to establish a consensus on the "state-of-the-art" diagnostics of pathological PC use.

Subprojects: As agreed, previous term papers from the PPG project

  • Eichhorst, W. (2011). Pathologischer PC-Gebrauch. Exzessive Internetnutzung als Stressbewältigungsstrategie von Berufsschülern. Master-Thesis.
  • Gleisberg, D. (2011).
Master-Thesis.

Duration / Project Period

Practical Project: Inclusion

Project Description

Psychology, unlike fields such as education, has not yet fully embraced the concept of inclusion. This is partly because tasks such as psychological diagnostics have traditionally focused on selection and segregation, emphasizing differences rather than commonalities.

Designing principles of inclusion in disability services is a task outlined by the WHO and to which Germany has also committed. Students will explore the possibilities and limitations of the concept of inclusion and, using process diagnostics as an example, will practically experience and practice the individualizing principles of inclusion.

The first part of the project involves preparatory work (literature review, working groups on various types of disabilities, etc.); the second part includes participatory process diagnostics with evaluation in an associated institution.

Duration / Project Period
October 19, 2011 - February 15, 2012

Requirements / Credit Recognition
For students of the Rehabilitation Psychology Master's program, 3rd semester

Quality Assurance in Vocational Rehabilitation

Project Description

The project team supports the staff of the BBW (Berufsbildungswerk) in the ongoing process of quality assurance. It is crucial to distinguish between meaningful and less relevant topics and questions, and to gather opinions on these through various types of surveys.

The perspectives of different client groups, such as trainees or companies, are taken into account. During the surveys, participants have personal contact with vocational rehabilitation clients. The collected data is maintained and analyzed in SPSS and examined from multiple perspectives. The team discusses the results of the quality report together with BBW representatives, including psychologists and quality management staff. Improvements and reorientations are defined, and the process begins anew.

Students joining the research project are guided by experienced participants and introduced to more advanced tasks to ensure the sustainability of the project. First-semester students are also welcome, providing an opportunity to participate in an exciting project that combines practical experience with valuable theoretical knowledge.

Skills and Knowledge That Can Be Gained in the Project:

  • Fundamentals of vocational rehabilitation in Germany as a substantial subsystem of rehabilitative care
  • Basics of quality assurance
  • Diagnostics in vocational rehabilitation
  • Development and validation of assessment tools in vocational rehabilitation
  • Data collection, analysis, and presentation of project data

The practical/research project is supported by Berufsbildungswerk (BBW) Stendal GmbH.

Requirements / Credit Recognition
Participation in the project can be recognized as proof of an internship.

Sexual Education Needs for Caregivers of People with Intellectual Disabilities

Project Description

"Support for the Supporters" - to what extent is this principle already implemented in facilities for people with intellectual disabilities in Germany?

As part of a Bachelor's thesis titled "Intellectual Disability and Parenthood - Perspectives and Needs for Empowerment and Integration: A Needs Analysis of Instruments", two questionnaires were developed to assess the professional training needs of caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities. The goal is to determine how the topic of intellectual disability and parenthood is currently addressed and what types of support are desired by the environment of people with intellectual disabilities. Based on the designed questionnaire inventory, it is intended that this instrument will be distributed to various facilities for people with intellectual disabilities across Germany.

The project includes the following tasks:

  • Empirical assessment of current training and support needs
  • Design of a training programTesting with the PSAG (Psychosocial Working Group)
  • Implementation in practice

The focus is on facilitating the handling of this topic and reducing feelings of helplessness regarding these situations.

The attempt to implement the "Support for the Supporters" program in practice will be the primary objective of this project.

Duration / Project Period
Since Summer Semester 2010

Requirements / Credit Recognition
For students of the Rehabilitation Psychology program - the project can be used as part of a Bachelor's or Master's thesis.
