Committee Work and University Political Engagement

Every year in June, elections for university committees take place. These elections give each of you the opportunity to actively participate in shaping the university. The Student Council itself is not the only committee you can be involved in. The following explains the structures and responsibilities of the individual committees in more detail.

Senate

The Senate is the most important decision-making body at the university. It deals with the essentials. The senators address topics such as budget allocation, professors, students, university policy, and examination regulations, among others. Four elected student representatives from the student body sit in the Senate. Through their votes, every student is heard in the university's highest body. The Student Council itself also elects one of its own members to represent it in the Senate.

Committees

The committees are working groups elected by the Senate, composed of qualified faculty and staff members of the university. Again, the Student Council also elects a student representative to each committee. Meetings for the following committees take place on the first Wednesday of every month.

  • Committee for Studies and Teaching
  • Committee for Budget and Staff Development
  • Committee for Research, Development, and Technology Transfer
  • Committee for International Affairs
  • Committee for University Development and Marketing
  • Committee for Communication and Information Processing
  • Library Committee
  • Advisory Board of the Center for Higher Education Didactics and Applied Higher Education Research

Compartment Council

Student representatives are elected once a year in all seven departments. The 11 elected members of each Compartment Council (FasRa) address the concerns and problems of the students, whether it's questions about examination regulations or issues with lecturers. They organize departmental parties and bring in external speakers for interesting guest lectures. Each FasRa has at least €2,000 per semester at its disposal. It's worth checking them out. You can get funding for department-related events and projects through them.

Departmental Councils

The Departmental Council (FBR) decides on all matters that directly affect your department. This includes topics such as examination and study regulations, hiring new staff, and the acquisition of new equipment. Two students are elected annually to each Departmental Council to represent the student interests of their respective department. If you wish to file an objection or have questions about current decisions within your department, they can certainly help.
