In light of what decades of management research have taught us, the idea that Trump could be seen as a role model for leadership is deeply troubling. Yet leadership qualities can be cultivated in many places. The key question is: what should we pay attention to when we ourselves hold a role-model function and do not endorse the values of the Trump era?

What relevance does civil solidarity have in times when democratic values are under threat? How can solidarity-based alliances demonstrate political effectiveness at regional and supraregional levels? This session focuses on these questions, beginning with the meaning of the term “civil solidarity” and, drawing on empirical examples, developing a line of argument for discussion.
