Research Projects

Research projects are carried out at the SGM department in collaboration with universities and institutions in Germany and abroad. These may be internationally supervised theses, but also transnational research projects or research visits by students and lecturers.

Vision, mission and programme of the project ‘Social work with refugees’

In 2019, a DAAD-funded project was carried out at the FB SGM with the aim of bringing together lecturers, students and actors from civil society, humanitarian aid and welfare services in Palestine, Jordan and Germany to jointly carry out, evaluate and present practical projects on social work with refugees at local level.

This creates (1) a transnational and regional network in Palestine, Jordan and Germany that produces sustainable best practice examples, thereby making a social and scientific contribution to the debate on the integration of refugees. By implementing the practical projects, students can (2) further develop their scientific and intercultural skills in an inspiring environment of cultural diversity. The universities and actors from civil society, humanitarian aid and welfare services gain (3) the opportunity to expand and improve their services through the practical projects.

This win-win situation creates a network within the framework of the project that addresses the refugee issue from multiple perspectives and effectively even beyond the duration of the project, thus not only creating a lasting connection between the partner institutions, but also between the large number of committed actors involved in refugee work.

The partner institutions include Al Balqa University (Jordan), An-Najah University (Palestine), Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences. The partner institutions carry out practical projects and excursions on site. The practical projects and excursions are discussed, analysed and evaluated jointly in Magdeburg (22 July to 4 August 2019) and in Amman (22 September and 28 September), where the results are presented to the general public in a lecture/publication.
