Research and projects
InSchuKa4.0
Combined infrastructure and environmental protection through AI-based sewer network management as part of Jena's own ZEUS initiative.
The project aims to improve sewer operations in the city of Jena (as an example of a large city in Germany) by using different operational and digitalisation strategies.
Wastewater and sewer management is becoming increasingly complex due to changes and unpredictability in water allocation. The focus of future optimisation measures must therefore be on dynamic-flexible sewer network management, which both enables optimal use of the existing sewer network volume with regard to heavy rainfall events and counteracts possible negative effects during dry periods, such as increased deposits, odour and corrosion hazards or the uncontrolled discharge of pollutants into water bodies during short-term heavy rainfall events, by means of intelligent data acquisition, evaluation and control.
The project partners will, among others, use simulations to investigate the deposition behaviour and sulphide development in the sewer and develop a process engineering concept for combined reservoir activation and sewer flushing, with the aim of proposing a suitable dynamic sewer network management.
Summer school Vietnam "Sustainable Environmental Technologies"
Sommerschule Vietnam "Sustainable Environmental Technologies"
The aim of summer schools abroad is to introduce the German higher education and research system abroad and thus arouse interest in a study or research stay in Germany. In addition to socio-cultural insights, application procedures, study requirements and language acquisition information, basic knowledge and scientific working methods are also taught, whereby the content always relates to the host country.
After the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences conducted a multi-part summer school programme in Cuba between 2016 and 2017, a summer school programme will now take place in 2022, probably in July, in Ho Chi Min City at the partner university IUH.

DryRivers
DRYRIVERS - Goals, requirements, strategies and tools for a sustainable low water risk management
The DRYRIVERS project aims to develop a practical tool that can effectively, objectively and transparently support authorities in the low water risk management of a watercourse. The steps from problem identification and quantitative assessment of the watercourse to long-term and sustainable mitigation measures are to be integrated. Water management, socio-economic and ecological aspects will be equally considered within the proposed project in a multi-criteria framework.

flexigast
Development and testing of a method for flexible biogas production and optimised heat storage based on targeted variations of fermentation temperatures
In order to counterbalance the fluctuating electricity generation from wind and photovoltaics, biogas plants are increasingly being equipped for demand-oriented electricity production. This so-called "flexibilisation" of biogas plants is accompanied by the installation of additional electrical power through new combined heat and power sytems (CHP) and other necessary measures, which together result in a not insignificant investment. In particular, the large increase of the gas storage volume, which depends on the degree of flexibility, and the installation of heat storage facilities, which may be necessary depending on the heat utilisation concept, should be mentioned here.
For this purpose, a new method (“flexigast”) for demand-oriented biogas production and optimised heat storage based on systematic variations of the fermentation temperatures in the fermenters is to be developed within the framework of the project. If the CHP is switched off according to the electricity schedule, the fermentation temperature is lowered in a targeted manner. When the CHP unit is put back into operation, the temperature is increased. These temperature variations should be combined with flexible feeding. The feeding variations should only be supportive and coordinated in accordance with the targeted temperature changes and should, in addition that, apply to common, practice-relevant substrates or residues with relatively slow fermentation behaviour. In the second half of the project, the method is to be tested on a pilot plant and on a liquid manure biogas plant.
A decrease in the average methane yield and process stability can be avoided by controlled process management. By using a heat pump, the potential and controllability of the required temperature reductions are improved and at the same time the temperature and the usable amount of heat for external consumers are significantly increased.

Key objectives are:
- The significant reduction of the gas storage volume required for flexibilisation,
- the avoidance of additional heat storage tanks,
- the operational optimisation of heat management
- and an improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of feeding variations through targeted temperature adjustment.

NAPOLY
Development of nanoporous ceramic hybrid membranes with switchable polyelectrolyte coating for the drinking and waste water treatment (NAPOLY)
A growing world population is leading to a higher amount and variety of contaminations for surface water. Therefore, the challenges for water treatment are growing and also the demand for new techniques and approaches for a sustainable water industry.
Anthropogenic impacts for the aquatic environment especially the exposition of pharmaceutical products such as antibiotics, painkillers and hormones lead to problems conventional water treatment cannot manage.
The goal of the project is to widen the boundaries of the conventional water treatment and give an ecological and economical alternative to deal with these requirements. The development of new ceramic filters modified with polyelectrolytes coated with Layer-by-Layer technology can support these goals. By adapting the membranes to different treatment conditions the efficiency can be increased and so overcome the most common problem of the ceramic membrane technology, the high invest and process costs.

Project goals
- Elimination of anthropogenic trace substances (Pharmaceuticals, microplastics) with membranes
- Extension of the conventional boundaries for drinking and wastewater treatment
- Development, adaption and characterisation of ceramic membranes with switchable polyelectrolyte surfaces
- Laboratory tests and scale-up for existing water systems

ThermoFlex-WAVE
Further development and validation of a technology for internal heat storage for a more efficient heat utilisation of biogas plants.
The ThermoFlex process enables biogas plants to be made more flexible with a high degree of heat utilisation without additional heat storage. The process is based on targeted, controlled operation of a second fermentation stage (secondary fermenter) in thermophilic temperature ranges as a heat accumulator after a mesophilic first stage (fermenter). An important prerequisite of the new process is that the process biology of the weakly loaded secondary fermenter tolerates corresponding temperature variations. This has been sufficiently confirmed in the course of the above-mentioned project for normal process conditions. Based on the promising results achieved in the previous project, a transfer of the ThermoFlex process into industrial-scale applications is planned. This will require extensive R&D work to further develop/adapt and validate/test the developed process in ThermoFlex-WAVE prior to a successful market launch.

Model-based operational optimization of biogas plants
The development of a model-based consulting system for the direct support of the ongoing plant operation of biogas plants is planed. This innovative consulting system should automatically and based on the available measurement data and mathematical models for dynamic simulation, perform a detailed analysis of the biological processes and the operating status of the respective plant and thereby perform an assessment of the data quality.
The system should use expert knowledge to identify possible causes of diagnosed operating problems and to derive corresponding recommendations for their solution or for optimizing plant operation.

ThermoFlex
The ThermoFlex process is based on a targeted, controlled operation of a second fermentation stage (post fermenter) in thermophilic temperature ranges after a mesophilic first stage (fermenter). This allows an effective and flexible heat storage in the post fermenter for the fermenter heating and external heat utilization at an acceptable temperature level without additional storage. The dimensioning and thermal insulation of conventional secondary fermenters already offers a considerable heat storage potential even at relatively low temperature fluctuations. The process biology of the weakly loaded secondary fermenter tolerates targeted temperature variations, as already demonstrated in experimental trials.
