Welcome to the website of the Working Group on Urban Water Management with a focus on wastewater! The "Wastewater" working group conducts application-oriented research in a wide range of wastewater technology sectors as well as in the field of biogas technology.

Our work focuses on research and teaching with national and international partners from academia and industry.

Our main motivation is to be able to meet future challenges in wastewater management through applied research and training of young engineers. Challenges that we can meet with our interdisciplinarity, industrial and international experience.

Gold Innovation Award for flexigast process

Outstanding contributions to the further development of biogas technology were honored at the 18th Biogas Innovation Congress, which took place on May 21 and 22, 2025, in Osnabrück. This year, the German Farmers' Association's Gold Innovation Award in the Science category, worth €6,000, went to Ingolf Seick and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Wiese from the Institute for Water Management and Ecotechnology at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences for their “flexigast” process.

The award-winning development represents a significant advance in the so-called flexibilisation of biogas plants for demand-oriented electricity production. The aim of the process is to produce biogas in a more demand-oriented and efficient manner by specifically varying fermentation temperatures and implementing dynamic feed management. Among other things, this enables a reduction of more than 50 percent in the gas storage volume required for the flexibilization of the plants and, in many cases, makes additional heat storage unnecessary.

Future water management students on excursion

From June 10 to June 13, our students went on an excursion. They visited the wastewater treatment plants in Wansdorf, Stralsund, Bergen, and Stavenhagen, as well as the Greifswald barrage, the Rügen Bridge, and the port of Mukran. They also visited the drinking water plants in Tegel, Lüssow, and Rostock. This gave the students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of facilities and processes in practice and to deepen their knowledge. We would like to thank the associations and operators for their warm welcome and for taking the time to show us their facilities and answer the students' numerous questions.

UKH

UKH – Generalizable Solutions for Sustainable Water Management in Healthcare Facilities Using the Example of the University Hospital Halle (Saale)

Healthcare facilities such as hospitals have a high demand for water and energy. At the same time, pharmaceutical residues, antibiotics, and potentially pathogenic microorganisms enter the water cycle via wastewater. The aim of the project is to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for integrated water and energy management that reduce resource consumption while minimizing environmental impacts.

The focus is on the use of wastewater to reduce drinking water consumption, as well as on the recovery of energy from wastewater streams. In parallel, advanced wastewater treatment processes (fourth treatment stage) are being investigated, particularly to efficiently remove pharmaceutical residues and multi-resistant pathogens.

A key component of the project is the analysis of wastewater streams at the University Hospital Halle (Saale), as well as the development and experimental investigation of innovative treatment technologies. These include, in particular, membrane processes and adsorption processes. The investigations are carried out at laboratory scale.

By combining micropollutant removal, water reuse, energy recovery, and blue-green infrastructure, the project makes an important contribution to the sustainable transformation of the healthcare sector and to meeting future regulatory requirements.

FlexContAr

Flexible container-based pilot unit for use as a fourth treatment stage in wastewater treatment plants for the removal of anthropogenic trace contaminants (FlexContAr)

The removal of anthropogenic trace substances has come further into focus due to the revision of the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (EU-KARL). The majority of wastewater treatment plants are not designed to retain anthropogenic trace substances. As a result, these plants represent a pathway through which such substances enter the environment. Some of these compounds are also difficult or impossible to degrade and can harm the environment. The revision will require selected wastewater treatment plants to implement trace substance removal in the future. However, the implementation of established processes, such as ozonation or the use of activated carbon, is associated with high investment and operating costs. Medium-sized and small treatment plants, in particular, may face significant challenges if required to implement a fourth treatment stage.

In the FlexContAr project, different processes are being investigated at a large technical scale, having previously been successfully tested at laboratory scale. On the one hand, a process from the h2 project NaPoLy is being examined, and on the other hand, a process combination developed by GMBU. In the NaPoLy project, h2, together with Nanostone Water GmbH and Surflay Nanotec GmbH, investigated the effectiveness of polyelectrolyte-coated ceramic membranes with regard to the retention of pharmaceutical residues. GMBU has developed a combined application of oxidizing agents and UV radiation, which has also been successfully tested at laboratory scale.

By using container-based systems, implementation at a large technical scale is made possible at the outlet of the Halle-Nord wastewater treatment plant. The containers are installed with the respective processes in such a way that independent parallel operation as well as a combination of the processes is possible.

The aim of the project is to achieve high treatment performance with regard to the removal of pharmaceutical residues at comparatively low cost, thereby creating an economically viable alternative to already established processes.

WasABi

Development of a modular, container-based water treatment system for integrated multi-trophic aquaculture with oxidative sanitation, as well as coupling to biogas plants for cascaded residual material utilization and mutual heat regulation (WasABi)

The aim of the joint project is to develop a container-based water treatment system that can be integrated into traditional aquaculture facilities in a space-saving and cost-efficient manner. This modular water treatment approach is intended to enable operators of existing facilities to meet the required quality standards for discharged wastewater or to reuse water multiple times. A computer model to be developed will allow system-specific scaling.

Wastewater treatment focuses on mechanical cleaning, biological treatment in the form of nitrification and denitrification, and sanitation using innovative photocatalytic oxidation or oxidation via diamond electrodes. Two additional treatment options include nutrient removal through a hydroponic component for plant production, as well as the utilization of organic residues from the module (e.g., aquaculture sludge and hydroponic residues) in biogas plants.

Using integrated measurement and control technology, the computer model can assess water pollution levels and, based on this, manage the flow of water through the treatment stages. Through computer modeling and experimental results, it becomes possible to provide targeted recommendations for the use of water treatment containers and for the efficient utilization of residual materials in biogas plants. Furthermore, thanks to integrated energy management, the system can serve as a basis for planning new biogas plants in close proximity to aquaculture facilities, where they can act as heat consumers.

Such a “plug-and-play” system with an integrated water and energy management model, applicable to a wide range of aquaculture systems and scales, improves both the ecological footprint of traditional aquaculture and the self-sufficiency of sustainably produced food in Germany and worldwide. At the same time, it can strengthen decentralized renewable energy supply.

ThermoFlex-WAVE

Model-based operation optimization of biogas plants

The development of a model-based consulting system for the direct support of the ongoing plant operation of biogas plants is planed. This innovative consulting system should automatically and based on the available measurement data and mathematical models for dynamic simulation, perform a detailed analysis of the biological processes and the operating status of the respective plant and thereby perform an assessment of the data quality.

The system should use expert knowledge to identify possible causes of diagnosed operating problems and to derive corresponding recommendations for their solution or for optimizing plant operation.
