All About Studying
Don’t worry, every student was a fresher once! To make it easier to get started at our university, we have summarised all of the most important information about studying for you here.
Semester dates and deadlines
The academic year differs considerably from the school year. All the most important deadlines, lecture and examination periods and lecture-free days can be found here.
Student ID card and semester travel pass
You will receive your student ID card along with your certificate of enrolment. This is also valid as:
- a user ID card for the library (after registering in person)
- a semester travel pass for the ÖPNV (public transport) in Magdeburg, if you are studying on the Magdeburg campus: this will allow you to use the public transport services in Magdeburg round the clock. If you are studying on the Stendal campus, you may also purchase the semester travel pass, provided that your main place of residence is registered in Magdeburg.
- Semester travel pass for the Deutsche Bahn, if you are studying on the Stendal campus: this will allow you to travel as often as you wish on the Stendal - Magdeburg route (incl. Magdeburg Herrenkrug station and in future Stendal Hochschule station).
Student Union card: cashless payments in the refectory
An empty stomach is no good for studying. Therefore, our refectories offer a variety of different dishes at fair prices every day. In both institutions and the integrated cafés you can pay cash-free with the student union chip card. The cards can be loaned permanently from the InfoPoints in Magdeburg and Stendal for 5 euros and regularly topped up.
BAföG
BAföG stands for the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (Federal Education & Training Assistance Act) and covers, among other things, state support for students. The Educational Financial Assistance Office in the Student Union provides help with any questions concerning BAföG and applications.
Important! The funding only starts in the month you make your application! It is therefore advisable to make an “deadline placeholder application” if you do not already have all of the necessary documentation to hand.
Registering your place of residence
If you are moving to Magdeburg or Stendal from another town or city, you must register with the municipal authorities within two weeks - either with your secondary or primary place of residence.
Worth knowing:
anyone switching their primary place of residence to the city of Magdeburg can benefit from the city’s special offers for students and receive a support payment of €160. Municipal Citizens’ Service for Students
The town of Stendal also supports “its” new students with a 100 euro cash welcome gift. Stendal Municipal Citizens’ Service
Studying in special circumstances
You will find the many possible sources of advice and support plus regulations aimed at better combining studying with family life or studying with disabilities here.
In the Stendal family room (FaZi) you can also obtain hourly and flexible childcare for your children – right on campus.
The Psychosocial Student Advisory Service is open to all students and employees of the universities in the area of responsibility of the student union. It offers free, non-binding and strictly confidential advice in stressful situations that may arise in the course of your studies.
Library
University Sport
Every semester, together with Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the university offers a varied range of sporting activities at both sites: be it climbing, sailing, breakdancing, Capoeira or Zumba - there is something for everyone. Registration for the sports courses is always at the start of the semester.
You can find the current range of sports available at www.h2.de/sport.
Careers Center
The University Careers Centre offers support in the search for jobs or internships.
If you wish to work alongside your studies or gain practical experience, you can take a look in our jobs portal www.nachwuchsmarkt.de or contact our staff directly.
Contact details and further information are available from www.h2.de/careercenter.
IT and Online Services
Our modern IT infrastructure makes it possible for you to communicate simply and securely with all members of the university. The most important digital tools can be found here.
ITM - Service department for IT and media technology
On the ITM web pages you can read how to use the campus wireless network, access the university network from off campus and use the central printing and copying system. The ITM service department also oversees the central computer pools.
Uni Account
With your certificate of enrolment you will automatically receive login details for the central IT services of the university such as email, the wireless network, printing, LSF, Moodle, intranet, the online student service and central computer workstations in Magdeburg and Stendal.

Timetable and course materials
Many lecturers make available their notes and other documents for lectures and seminars via the e-learning platform, Moodle.
Via the LSF web application you can access the timetables for your study programme online and view the relevant rooms and any cancelled periods. You can also enrol on certain courses via LSF.
You can log in with your uni account on both platforms.
With your uni account you will also receive a university email address, which you will keep for the duration of your studies. Official emails from the university will be sent to this address. So do not forget to check your university emails, as otherwise you might miss important information concerning everyday student life.
You can access your uni mail account with your personal mail programme (via IMAP/POP3) or via webmail or set up forwarding to your private email address.

Video conferences
DFNconf, Zoom Meetings and Adobe Connect are video conferencing services that make it possible to hold video conferences and have many useful functions such as screen sharing, a whiteboard and chat. Due to their ease of use, these tools are also used in teaching, in order to hold events such as online seminars or group working digitally.

Face-to-face teaching
As with the previous winter semester, during the 2022 summer semester the university will also be delivering face-to-face teaching at both the Magdeburg and Stendal campuses. The measures that will be taken and the rules to be followed are summarized briefly for you below:
- throughout the entire university premises the basic measures of keeping your distance, following hygiene rules, wearing a mask and ventilating regularly apply.
- Participation in all classes requires compliance with the 3G rule (geimpft (vaccinated), genesen (recovered) or getestet (tested).
- Proof of 3G compliance will be requested upon digital registration via h2.tisch.im as the central tool for data collection and in so doing confirmed on oath.
- Seats must be occupied in such a way that a distance of 1.5 metres can be maintained. The adjusted capacity of the rooms has been taken into account when planning the lectures, so that everyone will be able to participate in the classes and find a place.
- There is no requirement to wear a mask in your seat.
- However, if the minimum distance cannot be maintained, the wearing of a medical mouth and nose cover is mandatory.
- Arrangements for practicals will be determined on a case by case basis with distancing and/or a mask and with limited numbers of participants.
- Individual online courses supplement the face-to-face teaching.
- On the one hand, we rely on regular and intensive ventilation. Where that is not possible, we have obtained floor-mounted appliances to improve the air quality. This applies to the lecture hall centre in Magdeburg since the windows there can only be tilted open. To support the general ventilation activities, CO2 meters have been purchased for all departments to monitor the ventilation frequency.
- There are university test centres on both campuses: Magdeburg Campus, Building 15, entrance to the exercise hall, in the entrance area to the music booths (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 2 pm) and Stendal Campus, Building 2, in the first-aid room 0.07 (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 2 pm)
- Within the refectory building the wearing of an FFP2 mask is mandatory. The refectory also sells food to take away.
Extensive information on the hygiene plan for the 2022 summer semester can be found under: h2.de/coronavirus
