International Exchange Students

International exchange students at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences can take advantage of a comprehensive range of support measures to help them settle in during their semester abroad. From German courses and classes at various levels to additional events such as application training for international students in Germany, everything is offered to make it easier for students to start their studies at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. In addition, there is also a buddy programme, sports activities, library introductions and other programmes to help international students quickly settle into their new environment.

‚DIP-Semester‘-programme

Semester package for study activities (Bachelor level and master level)

With the ‚DIP-Semester‘-programme, we welcome international students to Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences in the departments of Social Work, Health and Media, and Applied Human Sciences. Through this programme, we offer international students the opportunity to spend an exchange semester taught in English at our University of Applied Sciences, focusing on the topics of diversity, inclusion and participation from an interdisciplinary perspective. Therefore, no German language skills are needed. Students have a range of options within the programme to tailor their semester programme to their individual needs.

In the individual course descriptions linked to the respective modules can be found more detailed and specific descriptions of the content and according type of examination, as well as the workload, number of ECTS/CP and campus (either Magdeburg or Stendal Campus). Please note that these may vary from semester to semester. To prepare for your stay at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, you are welcome to use these lists for guiding orientation. Through the ‚DIP-Semester‘-programme, 30 ECTS/CP can be completed. These are divided into 4 modules:

Module 1: German Language, Society and Political Systems

International exchange students are to choose any course(s) within the module worth 5 ECTS/CP.

Workload: 150 h
Credits: 5 ECTS

Application of the module: Incoming students are to choose any course(s) equivalent to 5 ECTS/CP

Learning outcomes:

After successfully completing the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate proficiency in the German language, including grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and oral expression,
Analyze and discuss socio-political aspects concerning diversity, discrimination, and inclusion,
Explain the historical development of the German state, including West and East Germany, the education system, and key aspects of its social, political, and welfare systems,
Apply academic and intercultural skills in a German academic context,
Describe and interpret contemporary everyday life, with a focus on Saxony-Anhalt and neighboring federal states.

Content:

German language and society, and its current political system,
Everyday life in contemporary Germany (especially the region of Saxony-Anhalt and the neighbouring federal states),
Socio-political topics in terms of diversity, discrimination and inclusion,
Historical developments of the German state including the history of West and East Germany, as well as the education system and the main features of its social, political and welfare systems.

Module 2: Practical Competencies and Intercultural Key Qualifications

International exchange students are to choose any course(s) within the module worth 4 ECTS/CP.

Learning outcomes:

After successfully completing the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
Communicate by using appropriate rhetorical strategies in presentations, discussions, and debates,
Apply problem-solving skills and reflective learning strategies to academic tasks,
Analyze and interpret texts, construct arguments, and engage in peer interaction,
demonstrate Intercultural understanding and awareness of international contexts.

Content:

Interpreting in everyday organisational contexts, professional communication, and presentation and rhetoric,
Critical reading, writing and oral skills, text work and stylistics.

Module 3: Dealing with Diversities: Theory, Research and Applied Concepts

International exchange students are to choose any courses within the module worth 6 ECTS/CP.

Learning outcomes:

After successfully completing the module, students will be able to:

Apply concepts of human rights-oriented engagement in social, health, and educational organisations,
Identify social problems and understand their contexts for application-oriented work and research,
Prepare for professional challenges in fields addressing intersectional perspectives and the goals of inclusion and participation, especially in diverse national, social, and cultural contexts,
Overview inter- and transnational knowledge of diversity, inclusion, and participation.

Perspectives on diversity, inclusion, and participation,
Concepts of human rights in social, health, and educational organisations,
Social problems and their contexts for applied work and research,
Insight of international work fields.

Module 4: DIP Elective field

International exchange students are to choose any course within the DIP course programme and exchange students with proven German language skills at a minimum level of B1 are also free to choose any other courses within the study programmes offered by the department of Social Work, Health and Media (SGM) or the department of Applied Human Sciences (AHW), worth 15 ECTS/CP.
